What is a NATO Watch Strap
A "NATO Watch Strap" is a generic term for a woven Nylon Watch Strap - originally one that met an official Military standard for Watch Straps.
History of NATO Watch Strap
The history of NATO strap actually based upon the standard watch strap issued by the British Ministry of Defense (MOD). It is identified as "G10" by the members of the British military because of the form used to requisite the strap (and/or other items) from their inventory. The reason why it got its name of "NATO" is because the strap carries a NSN or NATO stock number which identifies the type of the strap. Moreover, the actual military spec NATO strap comes in only a color, the Admiralty Grey, and carries only one width which is 20 mm. But the initial spec has changed in a couple of years back by MOD which the official strap width is now 18mm. Somehow it is depending on the strap manufacturing year as both 18mm and 20mm strap could be the officially issued by MOD. The hardware spec was initially chrome plated brass but has now issued in stainless steel fittings and there are actually TWO NATO stock numbers for the straps: Army/Navy (6645-99-124-2986) and RAF (6645-99-527-7059).
